I have been very fortunate to have been a part of so many successful teams during high school. My football team and jazz band each won two state championships while I was a member. However, speech contest was where I really shined. Speech gave even a weird misfit kid like myself a chance to succeed.
It was my junior year in high school when I was truly at my best. My friend and I performed a short play for speech contest. The play was called World Wide Fans, and was about two sports anchors reporting news about outrageous events such as the World Toe Wrestling Championships and the finals of the worst things to say on a first date contest. We took the script and made it our own. We inserted new lines, gestures, and even choreographed a dramatic fight scene at the end that involved me flipping my friend over a table.
When it came to the state contest, we performed perfectly. We knew we had performed well when the entire room erupted into applause as we finished. I will never forget the feeling of standing in front of that room and looking at everyone laughing and clapping and thinking to myself, "We made them feel this way!" My friend and I were selected to the All-State speech contest which was a huge honor for us.
After this experience, I learned many things that I still incorporate into my life today. I learned to enjoy all of the little things in life and to never be too serious to laugh. I also learned to be creative and think outside of the box. These skills will help me in college and perhaps in my future career.
Congrats on being selected All-State. I know that this is a huge honor. I don't have much experience giving speeches besides taking a speech class in high school and giving the welcome speech at my graduation. This is a big accomplishment and congrats!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on being selected to go to all state! A couple of my friends got that accomplishment and to them it was a big deal. That is something I wish I would have done! Good job!
ReplyDeleteYou lucky duck, I was in speech and my group went to state but we totally got ripped off. I too enjoy public speaking, mainly because my mom was my English teacher and so I liked to show off to her. Congrats for all state
ReplyDeleteCongradulations. Standing up in front of a bunch of people isn't easy, especially doing it at an All-State level. I am sure the applause at the end felt quite rewarding.
ReplyDeleteThat's an awesome accomplishment, I was on my high school's speech team, we didn't have tournaments that were extremely special statewide...only district wide, then nationals. Speech was awesome wasn't it?
ReplyDeleteI always wanted to be on the speech team at my high school, but it never really happened. However, I do know how big a deal it is to make it to state speech because one of my friends accomplished this once. I think it is great that you were able to make the crowd enjoy your show. I am sure that is one of the greatest feelings in the world.
ReplyDeleteI have a couple of friends that went to All-State for speech. They shared with me a bunch of stories so I could imagine how fun that was for you. I could also imagine how much better you were at public speaking after this.
ReplyDeleteThat's cool. I was never brave enough to do speech team. Do you have video of your performance? That would be cool to see! :)
