Assignment #1: Beloit College Mindset

After reading over this list of assumptions concerning my generation, I couldn't help but feel insulted by most of this list. It is as if the people that created the list forgot about our ability to gain information in many different ways. I knew nearly every topic discussed on this list because of either television, the internet, or oral communication. For instance, one of my favorite bands in Nirvana. If something is as timeless as Nirvana, your generation does not influence whether or not you enjoy it.

Number thirty-two on the list, "Czechoslovakia has never existed," angered me quite a bit. Apparently they forgot that history is still taught in high school. They also believe that we have never heard the stories of Galileo and Mechelangelo. We haven't been living under a rock for eighteen years. Our generation probably knows more about past popular culture and events than any other generation before. We have the technology to research just about anything at anytime.

I do understand how they developed this list. I would agree that without our access to technology, many of the statements on this list would be correct. With that being said, society should start to acknowledge that my generation understands the world around us and will be the driving force behind improving it in the future.

  1. You're totally right, I think that you were dead on right about if nobody had access to technology, then nobody of our generation would know what the list claims nobody knows.

  2. I felt the same way after reading the piece. I felt as though they really discredited our generation. Even though we did not live through most of the historical events listed, I am sure most of us have a common knowledge of them.

  3. I feel the same way. They made our generation sound like we were stupid and that we don't know anything. You were right about if we were to look these items up most of them would probably be true.

  4. I have to agree with the Czechoslovakia comment. I have always known that it existed. Some of us do remember the history we've been taught. I also agree with the fact that we have more access to history than any other generation because of the rapidly advancing technology.

  5. I love how you put the Czechoslovakia comment. You took the words right out of my mouth. We have not been living under a rock for the last 18 years. Give us some credit on what we have been learning and researching in school for the last 13 years. We are very smart with things that people may not even think we know about. We are more intelligent than many people may think.

  6. First off I would like to say this is the biggest piece of garbage i've ever read and nearly vomited reading it(that was a joke) and I actually agree with your pathetic excuse for a blog(also a joke), but it's true I loved history in school and this list makes us out to sound like we're slow or something, who doesn't know nirvana, and it's not our fault that we were raised in the technology age and most of our our computer literate while most our parents remain technology handicapped

  7. Agree! Czechoslovakia never existing is probably the worst item on the list. Technology is not the enemy but this list makes it seem like it is. It's true, we have the ability to research the past like old bands and historical events that have influenced our lives today. One point I think the list is trying to make that we aren't seeing due to how offended we are, is that yeah, we have access to internet and we have the ability to research any topic under the sun, but do we? Probably not as much as we check Facebook or watch Youtube (guilty).

  8. I agree with everything you said. It makes me kind of mad. Do they think we are all deaf and dumb? Yes we may be if we haven't had such great technology, but we do.
